Level 6th Vocabulary Curriculum Overview

Students in grade six ponder on active participation with text. They identify, analyze, evaluate and learn the deeper meanings of the concepts learnt in fifth grade. Language conventions and features of informational text and materials support greater perception of what they read, hear and see.

What Do Students Learn In Grade Sixth

Students study and review a wide range of writings in their sixth grade. The focus in this level is on students’ apprehension regarding multiplex narrative and informational texts. They read more than one text on a topic and learn to contrast, compare and assimilate information from the texts. Students also learn englishmany different and new terms with their meaning at length on how to apply as well which enhances their vocabulary in turn. Students will acquire and use new vocabulary in appropriate contexts and read facilely. Students can write and read English with varied sentence lengths and composition. They learn determined vocabulary and language while in sixth level.

At this level, students develop more skeptical skills to use instances from multiple sources to support their purpose. They amend, correct and rephrase their compositions and learn to use new perspectives to improve their writing as well as comprehension and reading abilities. Students engage constructively in conjoint discussions in sixth grade texts and topics. This helps them to learn how to present ideas or an argument and brace it with logical evidence with use of much better language. Developing educational as well as concern- specific vocabulary is highlighted.

Speaking and Listening

At this level, students listen carefully to media presentations and speakers, recognize, elucidate and ask questions to get more information. They tend to use advanced vocabulary in their speaking that they learn on daily basis. Graphics, music, sound, pictures all adds up to enhance their vocabulary. Students are helped in relating verbal communication with gestural message. Also, they learn to evaluate the use of rhetorical devices and figure persuasive techniques. They learn to refine their speech to multiple contexts and tasks and are capable of using English when it is appropriate.


Students in grade six engage in boosting their language skills commenced in earlier grades and rise to learn new rules for grammar, punctuation usage etc. They use their understanding of language in their writing, reading, listening and speaking. Students are taught various sentence patterns to expand expression and understanding. Though in grade six, independent reading is considered to be the primary means by which students expand their vocabulary, as well as they can be provided with a wide range of strategies for vocabulary accretion. Grade six is a level where students get to boost their knowledge, aptitude and vocabulary. They start to come up with new ideas on their own. They indulge in group discussions and have an increased interest to participate more in peer group activities. Like wise students must be taught new techniques of comprehending passages and must be made to learn new terms and advanced language. They become keen at observing things and then applying the same in their behavior. They are being taught Greek and Latin root words, and other language elements such as synonyms, antonyms, idioms, homonyms, suffixes and prefixes are shared in a more applied manner. All of this and more add up to enhancing their vocabulary and language in a more cohesive way and in no time the command on the language with profound knowledge expands.
